Yay cookies! Omnomnom!

Cookies are tasty, sometimes nutritious treats, and are usually meatless. Usually. There are so many different varieties and variants that I'm not going to attempt to cover them all, but here's a couple links for you:

So, I came across this article (via an aggregator, no I don't read Woman's Day, really!) with some suggestions on alternatives to the normal fare you'd stick on the backyard grill. Burgers, blah. Ribs, routine. How about some pound cake? (Er, wha?)

Rice is nice.

Y'know, I never considered making my own rice. I'm lazy, and didn't want to have to buy and clean a rice cooker, or deal with boiling it on a stove. Silly me. Did you know it's dead easy to make nearly perfect rice with a microwave? I didn't until a friend showed me.

Take a microwave-safe bowl, put in 2:1 water to rice (maybe a bit extra water), and nuke until most of the water is absorbed. 10-15 mins depending on the amount. No stirring, very little watching. You'd think it would boil over, but the microwaves seem to burst the rising bubbles, so very little mess. The rest of the water is absorbed as the rice cools and what you're left with is nearly as good as the output of the best dedicated rice cookers. No burned rice. You can add some vegetables and seasonings to the mix before nuking.

Of course, once you have rice, it's a wonderful base for all sorts of dishes. Uncle Ben's, a major rice-themed food distributor, has a number of good recipes. This online store also has recipes, categorized by country of origin. (Both found on the net, I'm not being paid for the referral!)
